Oakland to offer free internet for public housing residents to bridge digital divide

Oakland plans to provide free high-speed internet access for residents in public housing in an effort to close the digital divide, officials announced.

The Oakland Housing Authority plans to supply 1,117 households in the city’s five largest public housing communities with free wireless internet access by 2024, city officials said in a statement Saturday. Community rooms and areas will also have free Wi-Fi.

Community Coalition Expands Vision for Closing Digital Divide in Oakland

A pandemic-era coalition aimed at helping Oakland public school students learn is expanding its vision, the coalition #OaklandUndivided formally announced Friday.

What began as an effort to ensure Oakland school children could learn as their families coped with COVID-19 will expand to ensure all students from pre-kindergarten to college have access to a computer, the internet and culturally competent tech support.

Closing the Digital Divide: PG&E Supports Oakland Initiative to Boost Technology Access for Young Students

At a time when technology dependence is so critical for the success of schoolchildren, PG&E and The PG&E Corporation Foundation (Foundation) are continuing their ongoing commitment to digital access in education. Today, the Foundation announced it is making a charitable contribution of $250,000 for #OaklandUndivided to collectively ensure that 100% of Oakland public school students have access to a home computer, high-speed internet, and culturally competent tech support.

The announcement comes as representatives for PG&E and the Foundation joined others in Oakland today to celebrate the program’s impact to date.

Friday, March 13, 2020: The President of the United States declares a national emergency due to the coronavirus outbreak. That same afternoon, the superintendent of Oakland Unified School District (OUSD) in Oakland, Calif., declares that, starting the following Monday, OUSD’s 80 K-12 schools would cease in-person classes. The district’s 35,000 students would shift to distance learning through online classes and homework for at least the next month. And so began the most profound logistical challenge that Oakland school administrators had ever confronted.
